Science fiction classics and past comics.
First off, thanks to everyone who came by to see me and Garth at ANIME WEEKEND ATLANTA. It was my first time in Atlanta and I felt very welcome. We met Star Power fans, as well as Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire readers, and that’s always a pleasure. Meeting you all face-to-face is the most enjoyable part of attending any convention, and I hope to go back to AWA next year.
Now that I’m writing Star Power, I find myself reading science fiction again. It was one of my first loves, but it wasn’t the right genre to be immersed in while doing a fantasy webcomic for eleven years. Now that we have a protagonist in space, it’s time to dive back in to sci-fi, both in comic book and literary forms.
I have a stack of comic books to draw inspiration from. Nova, Guardians of the Galaxy, Quasar, Adam Strange, Mystery In Space (starring Captain Comet), the “Annihilation” series, the various “…of Kings” stories (Realm of Kings, War of Kings, etc), Darkhawk, Rann/Thanagar War, Planet Hulk, and so on. I’ve dug those comics out of storage and have been enjoying them all over again.
As far as science fiction literature goes, the list of essential novels and stories is far too long to list here, but I’m starting with some classics. I’ve often spoken of the grandeur of Isaac Asimov’s masterpiece, “The Foundation.” I reread these cornerstones of sci-fi recently (Foundation, Foundation and Empire, Second Foundation) and they reignited my love of the genre. I’m currently reading Frank Herbert’s “Dune” for the first time. I’m only halfway through the first novel, but so far I cannot put it down. I don’t know where I’ll be going from there, but I imagine it will be wondrous. Garth and I are hoping to capture that same wonder and grandeur with Star Power.
On Thursday I’ll have some news regarding the progress of the DOMINIC DEEGAN COLLECTION, as well as some new merchandise and other ways to support the old seer.
