Here Be Dragons. And A Convention. A DragonCon!
We’re lucky enough to be returning to DragonCon for another consecutive year as exhibitors. I’ve spoken at length about how much I love going to DragonCon in the past, and I’ll do so again for a moment today. I love going to DragonCon. A show its size retaining its character and soul is a rare thing, and we’re happy to be a part of that soul, even if our contribution is comparatively small.
DragonCon is famous for being a “party convention,” too. Every year, Garth and I vow that we’re finally going to take part in some wild party and experience the con from more than just an exhibitor’s perspective. And every single year Garth and I fail to do that. We meander around with friends, buy a few drinks for ourselves, people-watch the amazing cosplayers, and finally go back to our hotel room to rest up for the next day of exhibiting. I can’t speak for Garth, but I lack the social expertise to get myself invited to some wild party or get access to the VIP section of anywhere. In order for a guy like me to find a party, arrangements have to be made beforehand and I need to be given an invitation. So of course, DragonCon is spent exhibiting, having one or two evening drinks, and then going to bed.
But let’s be realistic. My nickname among my friends at conventions is “Old Man Mookie of the Mountain,” where I’m perceived as some grumpy old hermit who doesn’t want to be bothered by you crazy kids and your shenanigans, so I escape to my secluded lair to sleep and be alone. It’s… not entirely inaccurate, either. I’m famous for going back to my hotel room to “decompress,” only to find myself very comfortable in a quiet room on a soft bed, and I remain there for the rest of the evening. So even if I were to get in to some exclusive wild party, I’d most likely stay for about an hour before scuttling off to be alone. Damn kids and your late-night shenanigans.
Partying (and lack thereof) aside, Garth and I have a blast at DragonCon. We’ll be there all weekend and very eager to meet you!
