KA-BOOM and other sounds.

This is the second space battle in the comic’s run so far, and for the second time Garth and I are receiving a string of emails that ask the same question:

“If you guys are such space enthusiasts, why is there sound in outer space?”

It’s a valid question with a simple answer.  Garth and I love the awesome reality of space, but we also love the action and adventure of comic books.

In the sci-fi comics I grew up reading, explosions went “BOOM!” instead of “…” in space battles.  Some of the most iconic sounds in space adventure come from the original STAR WARS trilogy, from the roar of a TIE Fighter to the rapid zapping of an X-Wing’s guns.  Those climactic stellar dogfights would not have felt so thrilling if they were totally silent.

Danica’s lasers go “FWEEEN!” and explosions go “KA-BOOM!” around here because we chose to have them that way.  Star Power is about the wonder of space and the thrill of sci-fi superhero adventure.  We do our best to keep a nice balance between the two.
