Fantasy Star.
I love writing science fiction and superhero adventure, but a large part of my heart still belongs to the fantasy genre. I’m in no hurry to return to writing a fantasy comic, but when given the chance to play around in a fantasy setting I usually jump at the opportunity. Whether it’s a video game or a tabletop roleplaying game, I enjoy switching technology for magic and guns for swords. So that got me thinking about what would STAR POWER be like if it was a fantasy comic. What would our cast of characters be like in the fantasy genre? Here’s what I think:
Danica Maris, a Human, would be a young wizard’s apprentice who discovers a magical artifact that allows her to wield the incredible power of the stars.
Grex Obil, an Elf, would be a gruff and no-nonsense archer with a dark past.
Kaylo Durin, a Dwarf, would be a jolly but rough-and-tumble warrior who is sworn to protect his allies with his shield.
Shi Lalis, a Halfling, would be a cleric in the service of a benevolent god, providing guidance and a moral center for the group.
Dr. Brightman, a Human, would be a wise wizard who serves on the kingdom’s high council, advising the ruling monarch and reading the stars for otherworldly signs.
The Chief, an Orc or a Half-Orc, would be a respected and battle-hardened General in the kingdom’s army.
Beena din Ailua, a Half-Elf, would be a bard who provides entertainment for her friends and useful knowledge about an array of subjects.
Burke Tacken, a Human, would be a mercenary with a background that hints of a lost knighthood.
There are other members of the cast that I could do this with, like Black Hole Bill and Roarboar and the Void Angels and Old Tom, but you get the idea. I think this is a pretty accurate imagining of the regular cast as fantasy characters with fantasy roles, though some people may think Grex wouldn’t be an Elf, or Shi Lalis should be a Gnome, or whatever. In my idle daydreaming of the STAR POWER cast in a genre I used to call home, this is how I would have done things.
Spoiler: You will never see the cast sitting down to a game of space-Dungeons-and-Dragons so we can see their fantasy counterparts. As much as I love tabletop gaming, none of these characters are into that sort of thing and putting that activity into the story would feel like pandering.
